Job Objective: In addition to the objective outlined in the AVH Registered Nurse (RN) Job Description, the Labor and Delivery (L&D) RN is responsible for providing nursing care for the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patient guided by the policies and procedures of the unit. Duties and Responsibilities: - Meets all the essential duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse (RN).
- Additional duties and responsibilities of the L&D RN:
- Provides accurate interpretation and documentation of fetal monitor tracing.
- Provides quality care with accurate assessment, interventions, and documentation to the low to high risk obstetrical patient during antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period.
- Provides newborn care to the infant at delivery.
- Provides preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of the obstetrical patient.
- Provides quality care with accurate assessment, interventions, and documentation to the patient undergoing medical screening to determine stage of labor in the OB Observation Area (L&D Triage).
- Facilitates admission of patient to the Labor and Delivery unit and discharge of patients from the observation (Triage) area.
- Provides education to the patient/family regarding the labor and delivery process.
- Provides age specific education for infant, adolescent and adult.
Non-Essential Duties: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Possesses all the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities of the Registered Nurse (RN).
- Prior experience as a L&D RN, successful completion of the AVH L&D training program, or proof of completion of an equivalent training program from another facility is required.

- Completes twenty (20) hours of training in Breastfeeding and Lactation within 6 months of hire.
- BSN or MSN preferred.
Experience - Two (2) years recent clinical experience in L&D specialty area preferred.
Required Licensure and/or Certifications: Required: - Meets all required licensure and/or certifications of the Registered Nurse.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification required prior to completion of orientation and within 4 months from date of hire to L&D.
- Basic Fetal Monitoring certification required prior to completion of orientation and within 4 months from date of hire to L&D; Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification required within 2 years of basic certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required for L&D Charge Nurses.
- Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification is required for L&D Charge Nurses.
Desired: - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is encouraged for all L&D RNs.
- Certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (RNC-EFM).
- STABLE Program certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: - Work often performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions.
- May be exposed to contaminated Instruments that may cause Infections, burns, or cuts.
- Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting and reaching, and must be able to speak, see, and hear.
- Ability to frequently lift, push and pull up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to occasionally assist, as part of team, in lifting, pushing and/or pulling patients for the transfer of care, requiring exertion of up to and over 50 lbs.
- Must be able to use standard office equipment.
