About the Position: PACU WIP RN | Part Time | Days

The Women and Infants Pavilion (WIP) PostAnesthesia Care Unit (PACU) RN is responsible for providing post-operative and post-procedural nursing care of patients undergoing surgical and/or other invasive/procedures in the WIP PACU at Antelope Valley Hospital. The RN shall function under the guidelines of American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), Association for Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) Standards for Professional Nursing Practice in the Care of Women and Newborns, as well as the policies and procedures of the department and hospital.

Antelope Valley Hospital welcomes more than 4,500 babies a year through its Women & Infants Pavilion, a spacious and modern facility located on the hospital’s campus. It offers an inviting environment where families can experience birth with the right blend of comfort and technology to support them. The pavilion's home-like atmosphere includes 39 private rooms and couplet care (meaning families can stay together), as well as a state‑of‑the‑art NICU and three surgery suites.

Essential Duties

  • Provides age and developmentally appropriate specialized nursing care to obstetric/gynecologic patients during the post-operative/procedural period.
  • Provides newborn care to the infant after delivery. Facilitates/assists with skin-to-skin and breastfeeding when mother and baby are stable.
  • Insures patient safety throughout the continuum of post-anesthesia care.
  • Initiates and operates pain management equipment (i.e. PCA, Epidural, etc) per physician order.
  • Assesses patient for hypothermia and malignant hyperthermia and takes appropriate action.
  • Possesses knowledge of airway management and appropriate interventions.
  • Manages care of critically unstable patients during the post-operative phase of their care.
  • Observes and monitors by the methods appropriate to the patient’s medical condition, including monitoring oxygenation, ventilation, circulation and temperature.
  • Ability to assist with insertion of invasive lines and manage vasoactive drips.
  • Provides appropriate age specific education to patients and their families.
  • Possesses knowledge of “Core Measures” as it applies to the perioperative period.
  • Assists Operating Room staff during emergencies.

Skills and Abilities

  • Meets all skills and abilities of a Registered Nurse
  • Knowledge and application of surgical asepsis and sterile technique
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of proper supplies equipment and instrumentation needed for surgical procedures, i.e. electrocautery, patient monitoring equipment, and equipment such as neurological, cardiovascular, orthopedic equipment during procedures
  • Demonstrates competency in use of the new technologies relating to equipment and procedures
  • Ability to take charge of unit for the assigned shift, within two year from date of hire
  • Must complete accredited Perioperative Nursing Course and Preceptor Program and/or a one year surgical experience
  • Facilitates education/growth of employees/students
  • Demonstrate ability to supervise care provided by others
  • Adheres to accepted policy and procedure in providing patient care

Requirements

  • Current California Registered Nurse license
  • One year Registered Nurse experience
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • PALS certification (within 6 months of hire)
  • Annual Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification, at first available hospital training class
  • Annual Restraint Certification
  • Annual JCAHO Review/Competencies
