About the Position

Clinical Nurse Residency Position in our Pediatric Unit in our MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital, is looking for nurses that are flexible, enthusiastic about family and patient-centered care and passionate about pediatrics care. Our 35 bed unit will allow you to care for all pediatrics patients in the following services lines: Pedi oncology, pediatrics surgical, pediatrics stem cell transplant and cellular therapy and young adult stem cell transplant and cellular therapy.

 

About the Pediatrics Intensive Care Services Unit at MD Anderson 

Our Pediatrics Intensive Care Services Unit is a 9 bed pod providing an inter-professional team approach to care for all pediatric patients including: Medical/Surgical Pediatrics Intensive Care Services consisting of Immune Effector Cell Therapy, oncologic emergencies, acute oncology surgical procedures, and supportive care.

 

Essential Functions

This is a 12-month RN residency program that trains new graduates to the specialty role of an oncology clinical nurse. Oncology clinical nursing is a specialty nursing practice focused on the care of patients in the hospital setting. The role places the nurse on the forefront of administering cutting edge cancer treatments while caring holistically for the patient and family. As a clinical nurse, the new graduate will coordinate, treat, and evaluate patients in the hospital setting. Specific tasks associated with the role include patient assessment, coordination of care, treatment administration and patient/family education. This residency encompasses inpatient nursing areas including hematology, surgical oncology and medical oncology.

Program Objectives

The residency program is designed to be a component of the new graduate nurse's formal orientation at MD Anderson. The specialty specific clinical orientation along with leadership and socialization aspects of the program complement one another and provide the opportunity for a well-balanced orientation and transition to the role of registered nurse.

New graduate nurses will initiate professional nursing practice careers in a supportive environment committed to mentoring, coaching and learning. They will build confidence through a structured, professional transition-into-practice experience that consists of nursing orientation that is customized to individual developmental needs. They also will develop leadership skills through the 12-month residency program that will positively impact the professional practice environment and patient outcomes. New graduate nurses will create and enhance professional networks and relationships with peers during the residency, while honing and developing leadership skills in a world-class academic medical institution.

  • Manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care.
  • Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
  • Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team.
  • Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
  • Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participates in data collection for current studies.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.
  • Documents care according to established standards.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from computer systems.
  • Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
  • Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights.
  • Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Upcoming or recent (within 12 months) graduate from an accredited BSN program
  • No experience required
  • Current State of Texas professional nursing license (RN)
  • All clinical nurses with less than one year registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program
  • Foreign trained nurses who have not practiced nursing as an RN in the United States for at least one year will also be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program
