Ascend Registered Nurse Job Openings (ARNJOI) Index*

  • Launch: February 23, 2019
  • Entire Period: January 15th - May 5th
  • Current Period: April 29th - May 5th
  • Reporting: Weekly (Every Wednesday)

Why is the Index Important?

  • This index will help employers create better strategic plans based on real-time job postings and accessing data.
  • Assist in predicting recruitment advertising costs as well as the “time to find” registered nurse candidates.
  • Tracking the index can help identify the most optimal times of the year to open new searches for registered nurses.
  • Organizations planning for expansion or acquisition can predict the degree of difficulty on staffing up during certain times of the year.
  • By tracking both mobile and desktop indexes separately, we are measuring how nurses are finding the jobs over time as well.

Job Openings Spike to End April, Trickle to Start the Spring Hiring Season

  • Last week looked as though job openings would end April with a thump.
  • Instead, job openings spiked to end the month, spiking to 10659 at the onset of this past week.
  • The Ascend Registered Nurse Job Openings Index (ARNJOI) ended at April at a very healthy 5496.
  • After spiking, the ARNJOI trickled lower to start May, ending the week at 1446 (mobile).
  • Prior months have seen multiple spikes in activity - in the next few weeks, we’ll get an idea of the spring hiring season.

Job Openings Ended the Month with a Thump (4/28)

  • After a strong performance through the middle of April, Job Openings (ARNJOI) ended the month with a thump.
  • The ARNJOI started the week relatively strong, going from 341 to 3458.
  • After that brief revival, the ARNJOI consistently weakened, ending the final week of the month at an “unpretty” 617.
  • Overall, spring was relatively good to registered nurses, with job openings generally increasing.
  • We will see in the coming weeks whether the thump to the end month is a signal of something more sinister, or just a breather from an otherwise very healthy jobs picture.

Job Openings Came Back Down to Earth This Past Week (4/21)

  • After almost a month of continuously reaching new highs, the ARNJOI (Job Openings and Accessing Index) came back down to earth this past week.
  • The ARNJOI reached a weekly high of 7928 on tax day, Monday April 15th.
  • The 7928 was strong by historical 2019 standards, but far from the previous week’s all-time high of 11452 on April 8th.
  • Overall, spring has been kind to registered job seekers, with job openings popping up across the country.

Job Openings Boomed, Busted, and Boomed Again through the First Week of April

  • Just as expected in the basketball world around this time of year, the first week of April was hectic.
  • The ARNJOI (Job Openings and Accessing Index) started the month at 9326, at the time an all-time high.
  • The peak was quickly given up, bottoming at 1250 on Sunday, April 7th.
  • The ARNJOI has been particularly volatile in recent months, but the trend has been on an upward trajectory since the first of March.

Job Openings Boomed for a 3nd Straight Week - 3/25-3/31

  • The Monday peak was followed a few days later on March 29th with a very strong 8007.
  • This past week makes it appear that job openings general show up much stronger on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Overall, after a slow start, March has turned into an amazingly strong month. As with the overall economy re-accelerating, nurse job openings appear to be coming in much stronger.

Job Openings Boomed for a 2nd Straight Week - 3/18-3/24

  • After reaching a 2019 high in this past week, the ARNJOI reached a new peak on March 18th at 6504.

  • Overall, a very healthy week of job openings during St. Patrick’s Day week.
  • The week did, though, end on a thud. The St. Patrick’s Day holiday saw very few job openings.

A Rise at the End of the Week Highlights 3/4-3/11

  • The first full week of March started off with a bang, rising from 48 to 1282.
  • The ARNJOI’s bang in the first part of the week met some resistance, giving up group to bottom at 270 on 3/10.
  • After bottoming, the ARNJOI re-accelerated, ending the week at 1294.
  • Overall, healthy reading, albeit volatile.
  • In February 2019, the ARNJOI wasn’t moody at all. We’ll see if the volatility we saw last week holds.

  • Overall, we are anxiously awaiting how the index might end in February.

Ascend Registered Nurse Job Openings and Accessibility Index (ARNJOI)*

Welcome to the new Ascend Registered Nurse Job Openings and Accessibility Index (ARNJOI)!

  • The ARNJOI started the year off relatively weak at 861 for mobile and 446 for desktop. It stayed relatively low through most of January.
  • The ARNJOI then jumped at the end of first month of the year to 1,856 for mobile and 941 for desktop.
  • It appears job postings are more common at the end of a month.

Ascend Registered Nurse Job Openings and Accessibility Index (ARNJOI)

How is the ARNJPI constructed?

  • The numerator in the index is the count of the number of job openings across the most well-known job postings websites.(Indeed & Glassdoor using the keyword “registered nurse”). The job openings is derived from job postings by looking for the same job and title in the same location over the previous five days. If a match is found, the job is considered not a new job opening.
  • The numerator is then divided by the estimated number of nurses employed across the U.S. (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
  • This ratio is then seasonally adjusted and converted to thousands for reporting purposes.
  • Lastly, the Index is converted to mobile or desktop based upon site traffic analytics.
